5 Career Moves That Got Me Promoted 4 Times in 8 Years (And How You Can Do It Too)
5 Career Moves That Got Me Promoted 4 Times in 8 Years (And How You Can Do It Too)
Alright, let’s talk promotions. I’m talking about that feeling when you realize you’ve leveled up – not just once, but multiple times.
For me? Four promotions in eight years.
Who keeps count? My mom, obviously.
But here’s the real talk: Have you ever felt stuck? Like promotions are just out of reach, controlled by some invisible force pulling strings in the background?
I used to think that way, too – until I realized something big:
You have way more control than you think.
Here are the 5 powerful moves that changed my career – and can change yours too.
1. The Macro-Micro Roadmap
Think macro = when you do something.
Think micro = what you do day-to-day.
Everyone wants to fast-track their growth with flashy stuff like presenting to execs or mentoring. But unless you've already crushed your core job, it’s premature.
Here’s my rule:
-
6 months of mastering the basics
-
6 more months of consistently exceeding expectations
That foundation builds trust. It says, “I’ve got the essentials handled. I’m ready for more.”
Create your own roadmap – micro steps and macro milestones. Want a peek at mine? I’ve got a version for managers that I’ll link in the podcast 👇
2. Manage Up and Across
Forget boring networking events. This is about strategic relationship building.
When you start a new role, get your manager to intro you to:
-
A mentor (1 level above you – for real advice)
-
A peer manager (from another team – collaborate, praise them when their team helps yours)
-
Your manager’s boss (meet twice a year – share ideas, updates, or insights)
Why? Because visibility = advocacy.
You want people in the room to already know your name when promotion time comes around.
3. Get Direct, Get Clear
Don’t wait for the "perfect moment" to ask for a promotion.
Spoiler: it doesn’t exist.
Instead, tell your manager, “I want to grow into [next role]. What would I need to prove over the next 6-12 months to make that happen?”
This isn’t pushy – it’s proactive. And it gives you a clear blueprint for success.
4. Play the Game, Keep Score
Know what the company values.
Is it cost savings? Growth? Engagement? Whatever it is, find your numbers – and then track them relentlessly.
-
Improved retention by 12%?
-
Saved 10 hours per week via automation?
-
Increased satisfaction from 78% to 93%?
That’s your resume in motion.
And don’t forget to connect it back to core values like teamwork, innovation, or accountability. Speak their language.
5. Master ONE Thing (Yes, Even the Boring Stuff)
Find the unsexy part of your role that nobody wants – and OWN it.
In sales, I became the guy who made onboarding videos.
In marketing, I took over contract management.
Guess what? That made me essential. Not flashy, but dependable.
You don’t have to be good at everything. But be world-class at one thing that matters.
Your Career, Your Call
Your path won’t look like mine. And that’s the point.
The goal is to own your growth – not wait for someone to hand it to you.
